Individual Placement and Support starts from a belief that still surprises people: most people with severe mental health conditions want to work, can work, and don't need to become well first. In the Netherlands, IPS employment specialists work directly inside psychiatric teams — in the same building, often the same room. The model gets people into real, paid, competitive employment now, then builds support around them. After 30 months, 46% of IPS participants were in competitive employment — roughly twice the rate of traditional vocational rehabilitation.

IEFP (Instituto do Emprego e Formação Profissional) manages Portugal's Supported Employment programme for people with disabilities, operating through 87 Employment Centres nationwide. Employers who hire disabled workers receive wage subsidies of up to 75% of the national minimum wage for up to three years, plus grants for workplace adaptations. IEFP also funds vocational training in specialist rehabilitation centres (Centros de Reabilitação Profissional) and runs the Contrato de Emprego Apoiado scheme, which has placed thousands of workers in sheltered and open-market jobs since its inception.

Scope is one of Britain's largest disability charities. A few years ago it asked itself an honest question: are we actually a good employer for disabled people? The answer was uncomfortable. Job descriptions had unnecessary requirements. Interview formats assumed everyone communicates the same way. Hiring managers carried the same biases they'd spent years campaigning against. Scope redesigned their recruitment from scratch, stripped out artificial barriers, retrained interviewers, and launched Work With Me with Virgin Media — a public campaign asking employers to appoint a senior leader accountable for disability inclusion.

Stiftung Pfennigparade began as a rehabilitation clinic and kept asking one question that most clinics didn't: what happens after? PFRON (Państwowy Fundusz Rehabilitacji Osób Niepełnosprawnych) collects mandatory contributions from Polish employers with 25 or more staff who fall below the 6% disabled employment quota. The fund uses these revenues to co-finance wages for disabled workers at open-market companies — at present supporting over 240,000 workers — and to fund vocational rehabilitation centres, workplace adaptations, and assistive equipment grants. PFRON also operates a digital job-matching portal (Bon na pracę) connecting disabled jobseekers with contributing employers.
